My son and I learned that one of my friends from school had received a burgeoning amount of free bread from a local shop for her school’s breakfast program. We went, scooped up a whole bunch of it and donated it to low income seniors. It was food that was otherwise destined for the landfill that would now go towards being tasty treats for dozens.
Approach local bakeries and ask if they have donation programs. You would be surprised how easy this is. I sure was. The goods can be taken to soup kitchens, passed out to those with no fixed address or donated to subsidized housing units. Give them out to local church groups or to your neighbors. Much more effective than winding up in a landfill.
